The castle ruins Heldenburg offer, further to its history, a brilliant view into the Leine valley.
In the 13th century the Earls of Dassel and the Dukes of the Welfs built the castle Heldenburg to protect the salt spring. Due to its strategically advantageous location and the proximity to the city of Einbeck, the Dukes of Brunswick-Grubenhagen chose this castle to be their main residence for 200 years until the last of the line of the Welfs died in 1596.
A complete rehabilitation of the castle ruins was carried out from 1983 – 1988. Visitors will find more information on the Heldenburg on 17 information panels distributed along a circular route around the castle ruins.
The castle ruins belong to the Federal State of Lower Saxony. However, the association Förderverein Heldenburg Salzderhelden e.V. takes care of its supervision and organizes excavations, church services at the castle and events.
Find public guided tours of the Heldenburg for everyone as well as advice on excursions for Salzderhelden here. There are public guided tours on every first Sunday of the month from Mai to September (reservation is not necessary).
Furthermore, it is possible to request and book a guided tour of the Heldenburg (duration: 90 minutes, group size: max. 25 guests) via the contact form of the Tourist-Information Einbeck.
