Blue dying - since 1638!
Through the centuries, the traditional blue dye printing craft even found its way into the German language originating sayings such as “blau machen”. Cloths and fabrics are refined by using this printing technique. There are only a few traditional workshops in Germany and Europe that know the trade and are able work with it – one of them is located in Einbeck!
Even today, in the Middle of our historic Old Town elaborate printings are made using the traditional craftsmanship. From 1638 to 2005, Blue Dye Printing Einbeck was always in the hands of the dyers’ family Wittram. But not always at the same location. The original linen weaver and printing workshop was situated in the street Wolperstraße, then it moved to Tiedexer Straße and since the 18th century the blue dye printing workshop is located at the square Möncheplatz. There are more than 800 models (that’s how the wooden printing blocks are called) preserved until today. You can find models of nearly all stylistic periods since the invention of blue dye printing – and they are partially still used.
In 2018, the craftsmanship blue dye printing was included in the list of the UNESCO Intangible cultural heritage of mankind.
