Rathaus-Keller (Altes Rathaus)

Short facts

  • Einbeck

The City Hall Cellar is a vaulted cellar complex under the Old City Hall.

The Town Hall Cellar is located under the Old Town Hall, which is located directly on the market square in Einbeck. Nowadays, it can only be visited during a guided tour, which can be booked via the Tourist Information Einbeck

Underneath the town hall lies 700 years of history. The town hall has an almost complete cellar with six vaults, two cross vaults and four barrel vaults.
The town hall cellar consists of 3 naves, each divided into 5 vaulted bays by 4 pairs of columns.

During the great city fire on July 26, 1540, the city archive and the city's black powder were stored in the cellar of the previous building. Everything was destroyed in an explosion. After the town fire of 1540 the new building was erected on the remains of the massive previous structure, initially just a massive hall building, in the truss construction.

The cellar served as a wine cellar, council tavern and potato cellar for the surrounding residents.
