Memorial of the Franco-Prussian War 1870/1871

Short facts

  • Einbeck

The memorial was located on the market square until 1942.

Today the memorial is located at the foot of the Mühlenwall at the crossroads of Bismarckstraße and Benser Straße. Back in the days, the so-called war monument, which was dedicated at the Sedan Day festivities on September 3rd, 1876, was situated on the market square in the heart of the old town for 65 years. The Sedan Day festivities were a two-day event with banquet tables, dance, parades and fireworks. When the Till Eulenspiegel Fountain was built, the memorial had to move its place.

The memorial commemorates the fallen comrades of the war of 1870/71. At the same time it is considered a heritage building, which has something to do with Einbeck´s town history, and is part of the list of the town´s monuments. It measures 11 m in height, made of Thüster sandstone and Thüster limestone, and was designed by Conrad Wilhelm Hase.

In 2011, the society for the promotion of the memorial initiated its restoration due to damage through a fallen branch. Restoration works began in 2013 and on November 23rd, 2013, the restored memorial was solemnly and officially dedicated.
