The theater got its name from Wilhelm Bendow. The "man in the moon" and native of Einbeck was an actor and comedian and served humorists such as Loriot and Dieter Haller with his sketch "On the racetrack" and the much-quoted phrase "Where are they running?" served as a model for humorists such as Loriot and Dieter Hallervorden.
