The Fairytale Castle was once a birthday present from the last Hanoverian king, George V, to his wife, Queen Marie. Between 1858 and 1867, the "little Eldorado", as Queen Marie affectionately called her castle, was built on the legendary Marienberg. But even before it was completed, the family went into exile in Austria after losing the war against the Prussians and never returned to Hanover.
The 44-metre-high castle tower offers visitors a great view of the surrounding area with Hildesheim Cathedral, the Leinetal valley and the Seven Mountains and can be visited as part of a guided tour.
